What is an ETF?

An ETF is a single fund that holds many companies at once. Buying one broad US market ETF gives you a small stake in hundreds of companies in one purchase.

Because an ETF spreads your money across many companies, a problem at any single company matters less. That reduces company-specific risk but does not remove market risk — an ETF still falls when the market falls.

ETFs charge a small ongoing fee taken inside the fund, on top of anything a platform charges.
