What is a fractional share?

A fractional share is a slice of one share. If a share costs $230 and you invest $23, you own about a tenth of that share — including a tenth of the dividends it pays.

Fractional investing exists because share prices in the US are often far above what someone wants to start with. Buying by dollar amount rather than by share count removes that barrier.

You take on the same market risk as any other shareholder: the value of a fraction rises and falls exactly like the whole share, and you may get back less than you put in.
