How to buy US stocks from Liberia with Orange Money or MTN

Owning Apple, Tesla, or an S&P 500 ETF used to mean having a US bank account, a US broker, and thousands of dollars to spare. In 2026, a Liberian with a phone and $1 can do it in under a minute. Here's exactly how it works on TokenAfrica — from your first Orange Money deposit to your first fractional share.

Before you start: what you need

  • A smartphone (Android or iPhone) with the Liberty App by TokenAfrica installed.
  • A Liberian National ID, passport, or driver's license for KYC verification.
  • An active Orange Money or MTN MoMo wallet — or any Liberian bank account.
  • An amount you're comfortable starting with. Even $1 (~LRD 200) is enough.

The 6-step process

  1. 1

    Open your TokenAfrica account

Download the Liberty App, sign up with your phone number, and complete KYC with a Liberian National ID, passport, or driver's license. Verification typically takes a few minutes and is fully digital — no branch visit needed.

  2. 2

Fund your wallet with Orange Money or MTN

From the Wallet tab, tap Deposit and choose Orange Money or MTN MoMo. Enter the LRD amount, confirm the USSD prompt on your phone, and your wallet is credited within seconds. You can also fund via Ecobank, UBA, IBLL or any major Liberian bank.

  3. 3

We convert LRD → USD automatically

TokenAfrica handles the LRD/USD conversion at a transparent published rate. Conversion is fee-free on deposits under $100, so it's the same whether you start with $5 or $500.

  4. 4

Pick a US stock or ETF

Search any of 6,000+ US-listed companies and ETFs — Apple, Tesla, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, the S&P 500 (VOO), or the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ). Each listing shows the live price, day change, company profile, and fundamentals.

  5. 5

Buy a fractional share from $1

Tap Buy, enter a dollar amount (not a number of shares), and review. You can own $1 of Apple even when one share trades above $200. Orders execute through our US-regulated broker partner during US market hours.

  6. 6

    Hold, track, or sell anytime

Your shares appear in Portfolio with live prices and P&L. Sell any time during US market hours — proceeds land back in your USD wallet in seconds, and you can withdraw to Orange Money, MTN, or your bank.

Worked example: $20 of Apple via Orange Money

Say you deposit LRD 4,000 via Orange Money. At an indicative rate of LRD 200 / USD, that converts to about $20 in your USD wallet — fee-free because it's under the $100 threshold. You search "AAPL", tap Buy, enter $20, and confirm. A few seconds later your Portfolio shows roughly 0.087 shares of Apple. If Apple goes up 10%, your $20 becomes $22; if it drops 10%, it becomes $18. You can sell any time the US market is open and withdraw back to Orange Money the same way.

Good first investments for Liberian beginners

  • S&P 500 ETF (VOO) — one ETF gives you a slice of the 500 biggest US companies. Historically averaged ~10% per year over the long run.
  • Nasdaq 100 ETF (QQQ) — concentrated in US tech: Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, and friends. Higher growth potential, higher swings.
  • Blue-chip single stocks — Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Coca-Cola (KO) — large, established companies with global brands.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal for Liberians to buy US stocks?

Yes. TokenAfrica is engaging with the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) and works with a US-regulated broker so Liberian investors can hold real US-listed shares in their own name, with full custody protection.

What's the minimum amount I can invest?

$1. Because we offer fractional shares, you don't need to afford a whole share of Apple, Tesla or Amazon — you can start with the price of a soft drink and add more whenever you want.

How long does an Orange Money deposit take to reach my US stock?

End-to-end, an Orange Money or MTN deposit to a confirmed Apple or Tesla position takes about 30 seconds during US market hours — the LRD → USD conversion and the trade execution both happen instantly.

Are there fees?

Deposits via Orange Money and MTN under $100 are fee-free. Conversion is at a transparent published LRD/USD rate, and stock and ETF trades have no commission on the basic plan. The full fee schedule lives on the Pricing page.

What about taxes and dividends?

US dividend income is subject to a 30% US withholding tax for non-US investors. Your dividends are paid into your USD wallet automatically. We provide an annual statement to help with any Liberian tax reporting.

What happens if TokenAfrica disappears?

Your shares are held in your name with our US-regulated broker partner, segregated from TokenAfrica's own assets and protected under SIPC up to $500,000 (including $250,000 cash) — independent of TokenAfrica's operations.
